Steven Sinofsky, a Microsoft executive has left Microsoft and the Windows franchise, effective immediately. Steven Sinofsky and Steve Ballmer have said that the decision was mutual and was thought that Ballmer might have put strain on their relationship. Julie Larson-Green will be taking Sinofsky’s position as President of the Windows division.

“I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company,” Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO said.

“It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft. I am humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone I have had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company,” Steven Sinofsky said in a statement.

“Steven is a rare talent,” a Microsoft executive told CNET. “But as you think about future leadership, collaboration will be critical in a way it has never has before.”

It all started in July 1989 when Sinofsky joined Microsoft as a brand new software design engineer, coming straight from a master’s degree in computer science.

Recently it was thought than Sinofsky would be the next CEO of the company after Ballmer left. It looks like he won’t even be close to that position now.
