Mobile apps seem to have taken over the world of gaming as of late, and despite the impending releases of mega-consoles like the Playstation 4 and Xbox One, for now it’s still the newest gaming apps that are making the headlines. Of course, from Tetris to Minecraft, there are pretty much innumerable arcade games out there that can keep you busy, kill time, and provide a bit of entertainment. But the real craze in the last couple of years has revolved around games with social aspects.
The fact is, these games add a new dimension to app gaming, involving online multiplayer communities in the same way that popular consoles now do. Competing with or against friends, family members, and even complete strangers just seems to make things more entertaining! So with that said, here are a few of the best social gaming apps we’ve been playing lately.
Words With Friends
Words With Friends is by no means anything new, but it remains arguably the most enjoyable social gaming app for mobile devices. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it’s essentially a slightly altered version of Scrabble that you can play against friends or strangers. You can also message opponents within the game.
If you’ve ever played Pictionary, you get the idea. Draw Something simply involves drawing pictures and having your friends guess a word or phrase based on the drawing. It’s simple, but it leads to a surprising amount of entertainment and a surprising number of laughs.
Poker In Play
This is an innovative poker betting app from BetFair that lets you gamble your actual money in an online poker environment. The twist? Instead of just trying to beat out your opponents with your hand, you are able to see everyone’s hand, and bet on which hand will win each pot.
Bloons TD Battles
Bloons TD has become one of the greatest tower defence games of all time, and moved to the world of apps some time ago. But the “Battles” edition expands things to involve direct competition with online opponents to see who can fend off the stream of balloons longest (by controlling monkeys with various popping abilities!).
This one’s pretty straightforward: hear a clip, guess the song! The real fun comes in your own success, and in the ability to challenge friends to recognize songs to kick up a bit of competition.
Running With Friends
It’s always surprising how little attention this game seemed to earn. It’s basically a cartoonish take on “running with the bulls” that amounts to a Temple Run knock-off. But, you’re able to compete with friends in an endless runner! This is still pretty unique among current gaming apps.
