Facebook is paying Microsoft a huge sum of $550 million in cash for a chunk of patent portfolio that Microsoft recently brought from AOL. This was done to try and make Facebook’s patent war chest as big as possible before it goes public next month.They are also looking to buy some more patents.
Earlier this month Microsoft paid over $1 billion to buy around 800 patents from AOL and is now sending around 650 of them to Facebook and Facebook will also gain a license to a further 275 patents and patent applications that Microsoft will continue to own.
